Loosing myself in a book.

I’ve recently started the 2nd book in Kate Elliot Crown of Stars series – The Burning Stone. The books are all set in a world that is similar to ours in late medieval times. There are differences, for one the society is more matriarchal with church leaders “biscops” being women. There is a sprinkling of the fantastic with magic and fantastical beasts.

I was not intending this to be a review, there are plenty of good reviews out there, so I’ll get on with what I was meaning to say. This is one of those books which you can truly lose yourself in. You know, you are reading it and something outside that world intrudes and you are for a second, jolted, disorientated. Also when you put it down for a break you are left still thinking about the characters and events. Marvellous stuff.

A mini rant.

A mini rant

After watching Peter Jackson’s “The Return of the king” again last night I just needed to vent a bit. It is a beautiful film as were the two previous, and as a Tolkien fan I was willing to forgive him some of the “changes” made to the story in 1 and 2, but in 3 the story is fundamentally altered. It misses what for me was one of the most important parts of the book, but I’ll say no more. If you have read the book you will probably know which part I mean, it isn’t even mentioned in the film and indeed due to the early demise of one of the main characters, could not happen in the film.

I will never understand why film makers feel the need to change things when they make a film “based on” a book. If I was an author I would be insulted.

To blog or not to blog? That is the question.

Despite my better judgment I am starting a blog. Quite what I will write about remains to be seen. Given my butterfly mind it could be anything or everything.
